South Africa has expressed its support for the recent ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, viewing it as a pivotal first step in addressing the ongoing humanitarian crisis. The country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized the importance of this agreement in providing relief to the 2.3 million Palestinians living in dire conditions in Gaza.
In a statement, South Africa called for the implementation of a just and lasting peace that upholds the human rights of both Palestinians and Israelis. The Foreign Ministry stressed that this ceasefire must serve as the foundation for a comprehensive peace agreement, one that includes the establishment of an independent, contiguous, and viable Palestinian state.
South Africa reiterated its firm stance on preserving Palestinian sovereignty and territorial integrity, urging that no land in Gaza or the West Bank be annexed following the ceasefire. The government also called for an immediate halt to the expansion of illegal settlements, warning that such actions would undermine prospects for long-term peace.
In addition to political concerns, South Africa made a pressing call for large-scale humanitarian assistance to be delivered to Gaza. The country urged the international community to remove any obstacles preventing aid from reaching the civilians in need, particularly those requiring food, water, and medical supplies.
With the humanitarian crisis in Gaza reaching alarming levels, South Africa’s government reiterated its commitment to supporting efforts aimed at securing a lasting resolution and ensuring that the needs of the Palestinian people are met without delay.
