South African police are preparing a rescue operation to retrieve a group of illegal miners who have remained underground in an abandoned mine for over a month.
Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe stated that experts met on Tuesday to finalize the operation plan, starting with a camera assessment to address safety concerns. Authorities clarified that the miners are not trapped but have refused to surface, fearing arrest.
The Society for the Protection of Our Constitution has filed a High Court case on behalf of the miners, seeking assurances they will not be detained upon emerging. The case has been adjourned, according to state broadcaster SABC.
President Cyril Ramaphosa condemned illegal mining on Monday, citing its detrimental impact on the economy and community safety. “These miners face arrest as part of Operation Vala Umgodi, which targets illicit mining nationwide,” he said.
Police have warned that some of the miners may be armed and connected to criminal syndicates, adding urgency to the planned rescue operation.
