Cape Town, South Africa’s legislative capital, has been crowned the world’s best city for 2025 in the latest rankings by global media powerhouse, Time Out. The city climbed from its previous second-place finish last year to take the top spot in the coveted annual “Best Cities in the World” list, a testament to its rising appeal among residents and visitors alike.
The ranking, revealed on Wednesday, highlights Cape Town for its blend of scenic beauty, resident satisfaction, and thriving food culture. Time Out, which compiles the list through a survey of over 18,500 residents and expert insights from more than 100 urban specialists, praised Cape Town for its vibrant mix of natural landscapes, cultural significance, and world-class culinary offerings.
Known affectionately as “The Mother City,” Cape Town is revered not only for its breathtaking natural surroundings, including the iconic Table Mountain and pristine beaches, but also for its rich history and dynamic cultural scene. The city has long attracted tourists with its top-tier dining, vibrant nightlife, and expansive green spaces, alongside its exceptional outdoor activities, making it a standout destination for both leisure and lifestyle.
Time Out’s rankings reflect a combination of factors, including local happiness and the city’s livability, offering a snapshot of what it’s like to live and work in each location. In Cape Town’s case, residents’ positive sentiment played a crucial role, as Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis emphasized the significance of this recognition, saying, “It is especially meaningful because it is based on the voices of the people who call Cape Town home.”
While Cape Town sits atop the list, it is followed by global metropolises such as Bangkok, New York, Melbourne, London, New Orleans, and Mexico City, all of which feature unique attractions and distinct urban experiences. However, Cape Town’s compelling combination of nature, culture, and high quality of life set it apart from the competition.
“This recognition reflects not just Cape Town’s unrivaled beauty and cultural diversity, but also the satisfaction of our residents,” Hill-Lewis added, highlighting the importance of local pride in securing the city’s place at the summit.
Alderman James Vos, Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, also celebrated the city’s success, noting that the recognition would be a major boost to the local tourism industry. In 2023, Cape Town’s tourism sector contributed over 27 billion rands (approximately 1.4 billion U.S. dollars) to the economy, supporting more than 91,000 jobs.
As global recognition continues to pour in, the city is poised for sustained growth, attracting both international tourists and investors, making Cape Town’s status as a world-class destination all the more solidified.
