The Lebombo Port of Entry, a major border crossing between South Africa and Mozambique, has been temporarily closed due to escalating political unrest in Mozambique. The closure follows allegations of election result manipulation after the recent national elections, where the ruling Frelimo party emerged victorious. The unrest has triggered widespread protests and disruptions, particularly in areas close to the border.
Sources confirm that vehicles are currently unable to pass through the border, with no indication of when the crossing will reopen. Despite attempts to reach the Border Management Authority (BMA) for comment, the agency has not responded, and its phone lines remain unanswered.
TRAC, the operator of the N4 Toll Route, confirmed the closure of the border post. TRAC spokesperson Solange Soares urged motorists to avoid the area, stating, “We are unsure when the border will be operational again. We advise all travelers to heed the guidance of local authorities and refrain from entering the area for now.”
In response to the unrest, the Drive Moz Facebook group, a popular travel community, issued a travel advisory, warning motorists to avoid traveling into Mozambique between November 13 and 15 due to planned protests. The group also advised travelers heading to Maputo resorts to consider alternative routes via the Kosi Bay Border or the eSwatini-Mozambique crossing. “Avoid traveling through Boane, Matola, and Maputo, as these areas are expected to be heavily impacted by the protests,” the group stated. They also noted that a 21-kilometer gravel road section between Goba and Bela Vista is passable for those needing to navigate the area.
Reports indicate a strong military presence on the Mozambican side of the border, particularly at the Ressano Garcia Port of Entry and Kilometre 4, as security forces attempt to maintain order in the region.
The political unrest stems from accusations of electoral fraud following Frelimo’s controversial win in the recent elections. These tensions have fueled protests and have significantly disrupted life near the border.
While the exact timeline for reopening the border remains unclear, the closure marks a significant disruption for cross-border travel, affecting both local economies and international trade.
