The National Communications Authority (NCA) of South Sudan has lifted the ban on Facebook and TikTok, effective January 28, following a week-long suspension aimed at curbing inflammatory content.
The NCA stated that the decision to block the platforms, initiated on January 22, was to address harmful content inciting violence and instability. NCA Director General Napoleon Adok Gai confirmed the goal of reducing such content had been achieved, emphasizing the commitment to fostering a safer digital environment.
Internet providers and mobile operators were commended for their cooperation, while platform operators Meta and TikTok were urged to enhance content monitoring. The NCA also stressed the need to balance tackling online incitement with protecting public access to digital platforms.
The ban drew mixed public reactions, with some supporting efforts to counter harmful content, while others expressed concerns over freedom of expression. CEPO, a local civil society organization, welcomed the lifting of the ban and urged social media users in South Sudan and Sudan to avoid spreading hate speech and misinformation.
