President Salva Kiir has urged South Sudan’s political parties to prepare for elections at the conclusion of the transitional period next year. He emphasized the need for parties to register and participate actively in the December 2026 elections.
Addressing the nation, President Kiir stated that these elections will mark a pivotal moment, encouraging political groups to engage openly, as some have yet to complete their registration processes. The 2026 General Election will be South Sudan’s first since gaining independence in 2011, following multiple postponements due to financial constraints and insufficient preparedness.
Daniel Awet Akot, Deputy Chairman of the SPLM, called for unity across the country and within the party to promote lasting peace and economic progress. He highlighted the importance of upholding the rule of law and fostering collaboration among South Sudanese citizens to secure stability.
Peter Lam Both, Secretary General of the SPLM, expressed gratitude for President Kiir’s consistent support, which has strengthened the party’s operations. He also praised recent directives aimed at improving resource allocation to enhance service delivery for the nation.
South Sudan now looks ahead to a historic election that will shape its political and economic future.
