In July 2024, a massive landslide triggered by heavy rainfall struck the highlands of Geze Gofa in southern Ethiopia, resulting in the tragic deaths of 250 people and displacing over 15,000 from their homes. The disaster swept through 23 kebeles, leaving behind destroyed infrastructure and shattered communities in dire need of aid.
One of the victims, Tigist Beneche, a mother of seven, recalls the devastation. “Our entire livelihood was destroyed,” she said, reflecting on the loss of her family’s farm and home. Tigist and thousands of others faced critical challenges as they struggled to rebuild from the disaster’s impact.
Humanitarian organizations and international partners stepped in to provide emergency relief to affected families. Through a collaborative effort, 700 households in the worst-hit areas, including Ayikina Zagimare, Ayikina Kaske, Alan Shara, and Anko Golma, received emergency shelter and essential supplies funded by the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Humanitarian Assistance program.
“We received cooking equipment, blankets, and vital items for survival,” Tigist shared, explaining how the aid arrived just in time to help her family endure the difficult conditions. Despite having temporary shelter, she admits that life has yet to return to normal and that the community remains haunted by the possibility of another landslide.
Local leaders and organizations continue working with residents to find lasting solutions, but significant challenges remain. Antheneh Yenu from People in Need emphasized the need for continued funding and support to help the community become more resilient. “Immediate assistance is crucial, but sustainable livelihoods are essential,” he noted.
Geze Gofa’s mountainous terrain has made it vulnerable to landslides and severe weather events, exacerbated by the ongoing climate crisis. Local residents and aid organizations alike call for improved climate resilience and sustainable development measures to prevent future tragedies.
