The Sudanese army has accused the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of launching a drone attack on a power station in northern Sudan, causing a power outage in Dongola city.
According to a military statement, the RSF targeted the Dongola power station with multiple drones, which were intercepted by the army’s air defenses. State news agency reported that 10 drones were involved in the attack, with some being shot down. The assault caused significant damage to one of the station’s transformers, leading to a citywide blackout.
The RSF has not issued a response to the allegations.
This incident follows recent accusations from the Sudanese Foreign Ministry that the RSF attacked power and water facilities in Al-Qadarif State and targeted civilians in central Al-Jazirah State.
The conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF, ongoing since April 2023, has led to catastrophic humanitarian consequences. According to the United Nations and local authorities, over 20,000 people have been killed, and 14 million displaced. However, research by U.S. universities places the death toll closer to 130,000.
The escalating violence has drawn international condemnation as civilians continue to bear the brunt of the prolonged conflict.
