The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) announced on Saturday that it has recaptured Wad Madani, a strategic city in El Gezira state, from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). In a statement seen by The Wall Africa Journal (WaJ), the SAF confirmed its forces were working to eliminate remaining RSF elements within the city.
Wad Madani, an agricultural hub south of Khartoum, had been under RSF control since December 2023. Its recapture marks a major victory in a conflict that began in April 2023 over disputes regarding the integration of the SAF and RSF, which has since plunged Sudan into a severe humanitarian crisis.
The war has displaced over 12 million people and left half of the population facing hunger. El Gezira state, despite its agricultural importance, has endured some of the conflict’s worst atrocities, including attacks on civilians, destruction of farmland, and widespread looting. Experts warn the region remains at risk of famine due to ongoing blockades.
The SAF has pledged to restore stability in the area, emphasizing its efforts to secure Wad Madani and address rebel resistance.
