The Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) have successfully recaptured Wad Madani, the capital of Al-Jazira state, signaling a significant shift in Sudan’s ongoing civil war. The victory ends a year-long occupation by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and represents a critical blow to the RSF and their UAE backers.
Strategically located near supply routes and agricultural hubs, Wad Madani’s liberation boosts morale for the SAF and allied forces, who have vowed to continue their campaign until all RSF-held territories are reclaimed. The SAF has also freed detainees from makeshift RSF prisons, addressing dire humanitarian conditions.
The RSF, facing setbacks across Al-Jazira and nearing Khartoum, has retreated. International sanctions, including U.S. measures against RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo and RSF-linked companies, further diminish the paramilitary group’s prospects for recovery or legitimacy.
As residents await the restoration of basic services and security, the SAF cautions against premature returns. The developments mark a turning point in Sudan’s conflict, with the RSF’s role and support significantly undermined.
