A devastating artillery attack struck a vegetable market in Omdurman, Sudan, killing at least 56 people and injuring 158 others. The attack, which occurred on Saturday, has been attributed to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), according to the Health Ministry.
Government spokesperson Khalid al-Aleisir denounced the strike, stating that women and children were among the casualties. He described the attack as a violation of international humanitarian law and part of a continued pattern of violence. Witnesses reported that the shelling originated from western Omdurman, an area under RSF control, and was accompanied by drone strikes.
Residents recounted that artillery shells landed in the middle of the market, leading to a high number of casualties. Medical staff at al-Nao Hospital reported being overwhelmed with the injured and appealed for urgent medical supplies, including stretchers and blood donations.
Meanwhile, an airstrike in Khartoum killed two civilians and wounded dozens in an RSF-held area, according to local emergency response teams.
The conflict between the Sudanese army and RSF, which began in April 2023, has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths, mass displacement, and severe food shortages. The UN estimates that 106,000 people in Khartoum are facing famine, with millions more experiencing critical hunger levels.
