Sudan and Iran have agreed to increase cooperation in trade, diplomacy and regional affairs, Sudan’s official news agency (SUNA) said on Tuesday.
Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Youssef met with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi on Monday to outline a plan to deepen bilateral ties. The two countries pledged to expand economic exchanges and trade through a ministerial committee in the coming months. A business forum bringing together companies and investors from both countries is also being prepared.
According to SUNA, Iran will take an “active role” in Sudan’s post-war reconstruction efforts. Sudan has been embroiled in a devastating conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023 that has left more than 20,000 dead and displaced 14 million people. However, research from US universities suggests the true death toll could be as high as 130,000.
Strengthening Diplomatic Ties
As part of their diplomatic engagement, Sudan and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) granting mutual visa exemptions to holders of diplomatic, special and official passports. They also agreed to establish a political consultative committee between their foreign ministries.
During his visit to Tehran, Yousef also met with the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, and emphasized Sudan’s determination to deepen its relations with Iran on multiple fronts.
