Sudan’s Foreign Minister Ali Youssef commended Türkiye for its unwavering support during Sudan’s ongoing conflict, which has caused immense humanitarian and social challenges. Violent clashes between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023 have resulted in over 20,000 deaths, millions displaced, and widespread need for humanitarian aid, according to UN reports.
In a statement highlighting Türkiye’s contributions, Youssef emphasized the “historical and trustworthy” ties between the two nations, strengthened under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Youssef noted Türkiye’s firm stance on Sudan’s sovereignty and applauded its generosity during the crisis. He also expressed optimism regarding Erdoğan’s recent proposal to mediate between Sudan and the UAE, following Türkiye’s successful mediation efforts between Ethiopia and Somalia.
Youssef criticized the RSF for failing to uphold the terms of the “Jeddah Declaration” signed in May 2023, which aimed to ease tensions. He described the war as a “War of Honor,” emphasizing the resilience and sacrifices of the Sudanese people.
Addressing post-conflict plans, Youssef called for the dissolution of all armed groups and the creation of a unified national army. He insisted that RSF leaders must be excluded from political roles in the transitional period, with the future leadership of Sudan determined through democratic elections.
The foreign minister accused the UAE of providing military assistance to the RSF via Chad, a claim reportedly corroborated by UN and Western institutions.
On international relations, Youssef described Sudan’s ties with Russia as stable and noted Russia’s veto of a British resolution against Sudan at the UN as a significant message challenging Western influence. He dismissed claims of famine in Sudan, instead characterizing the situation as poverty, and accused Western countries of applying double standards when addressing Sudan’s crisis.
Youssef concluded by calling for greater international recognition of Sudan’s challenges and efforts to maintain sovereignty amidst external and internal pressures.
