The Sudanese army has accused the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of targeting a power plant and other public infrastructure in White Nile State, South Sudan.
In a statement released on Sunday, the army claimed that RSF fighters bombed the Um Dabakir power plant and several other facilities in the region on Saturday night. The RSF has not yet responded to the allegations.
The accusation comes after the army reported recent territorial gains against RSF fighters in Khartoum and other areas.
Escalating Conflict and Humanitarian Crisis
The ongoing war between the Sudanese army and the RSF, which began in April 2023, has left more than 20,000 dead and displaced 14 million people, according to the UN and local authorities. However, research from US universities estimates the death toll at around 130,000.
With the conflict now spreading to 13 of Sudan’s 18 states, international and UN agencies are intensifying calls for an end to the fighting and warning of a worsening humanitarian disaster. Millions of Sudanese are facing the threat of famine and widespread food shortages.
