The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) have intensified their military operations, advancing toward Wad Madani, the capital of Al-Jazira State. Fighting is reported in the rural areas to the south and east of the city, which remains under the control of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Sudan War Monitor reports.
SAF’s momentum has been bolstered by recent victories, including the capture of Sinja in Sennar State last week. Their coordinated offensive originates from three main bases: Al-Managil to the west, Sennar City to the south, and Al-Fau to the east. The RSF, despite being outnumbered, continue to resist the SAF’s slow but steady progress.
Seizing Wad Madani would position the SAF for a potential advance toward Khartoum, passing through Blue Nile riverine settlements. Meanwhile, SAF troops in Sennar celebrated their partial capture of the Sennar Sugar Factory complex, although the main factory remains contested.
In eastern Al-Jazira, the SAF have also gained control of Um al-Qura village, about 25 kilometers from Wad Madani. Videos shared by SAF forces confirmed their presence in key parts of the locality.
The RSF has held significant portions of Al-Jazira since late 2023 but faced resistance from pro-army insurgents. Reports suggest that RSF reprisals against suspected SAF supporters caused widespread displacement, with villagers fleeing to neighboring regions.
SAF’s renewed offensive is supported by an influx of recruits from nearby states, including Gedaref, White Nile, and Sennar. In contrast, the RSF faces logistical challenges reinforcing its Al-Jazira forces due to the distance from its stronghold in Darfur and simultaneous SAF offensives in Khartoum State.
Skirmishes have also erupted in White Nile State, where RSF forces recently carried out operations near Ad-Douiem and along the border with South Sudan, attempting to divert SAF’s focus.
The escalating conflict underscores the dire humanitarian situation, with widespread displacement and significant civilian impact reported across the region.
