It was the first time that the Sudanese army managed to get complete control of Khartoum International Airport back out of the hand of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
It can be seen as the first real development in the present conflicts, the sources from the military confirmed on Thursday.
The soldiers blockaded nearly every main section neighboring the airport and started advancing towards the south near Jebel Awliya, the base of the RSF. The military situated at both banks of the Manshiya river, got Jebel Awliya on April 8th, leaving the bridge at Jebel Awliya as the only RSF-controlled access.
What the army has done starts with freeing the presidential palace last week, which is only part of the whole campaign which was the lure to get the RSF to evacuate the central Khartoum. Some witnesses reported RSF fighters going southwards, with some parts of the city cheering their leaving.
The war has brought devastating consequences to Sudan, over 12 million of people have been forced flee their homes and a humanitarian crisis of epic proportions is looming over the country. In the army wins, nonetheless, a new phase in the battle against the RSF would have been entered. Nevertheless, the situation in Sudan is still critical.
