Sudan’s Sovereign Council Chairman, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, is set to visit Türkiye on April 11, following the Sudanese army’s recent battlefield gains. This visit comes at a crucial time for Sudan, as the country’s military consolidates its control after two years of conflict with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Since April 15, 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in a war between the national army and the RSF. In the first year of the conflict, the army relocated the capital’s administrative functions to Port Sudan. However, following the recapture of Khartoum, General Al-Burhan triumphantly entered the city, celebrating the army’s victory. The latest military advances have significantly shifted the balance of power in favor of Sudan’s armed forces.
Türkiye has played a pivotal role in supporting Sudan’s military capabilities, with advanced drone technology such as the Bayraktar TB2 and Akıncı UAVs contributing to the army’s battlefield superiority. The backing of friendly nations has also been instrumental in Sudan’s resilience, while RSF-supporting actors, particularly the UAE, have faced setbacks in their efforts.
Al-Burhan’s visit to Türkiye coincides with diplomatic efforts to mediate tensions between Sudan and the UAE, whose ties have been strained by the war. Türkiye had previously sent a high-level diplomatic delegation to Sudan, signaling its commitment to regional stability.
This marks Al-Burhan’s second official visit to Türkiye, following his September 2023 trip. His upcoming meeting with Turkish officials is expected to focus on strengthening bilateral ties and exploring avenues for post-war reconstruction and regional diplomacy.
