Sudanese military leader General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan visited Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki in Asmara on Thursday for talks centered around the ongoing conflict in Sudan and the strengthening of bilateral ties between the two nations.
According to a statement from Sudan’s Sovereignty Council, the discussions, held at the presidential palace in Asmara, focused on the situation in Sudan, peace efforts, and regional and international concerns. Burhan emphasized that the visit was aimed at updating the Eritrean leadership on the developments in Sudan and expressing gratitude for Eritrea’s unwavering support for Sudan’s unity.
In comments to the Eritrean News Agency, Burhan stated that his one-day working visit was intended to provide insights into the latest developments of the Sudanese conflict. He also acknowledged Eritrea’s continued humanitarian and diplomatic support, including the reception of Sudanese refugees fleeing the violence.
President Afwerki, who welcomed Burhan’s visit, reaffirmed Eritrea’s steadfast support for Sudan, describing it as rooted in “solid principles and moral obligations.” He also called for regional cooperation in achieving a lasting peaceful resolution to the Sudanese conflict, advocating for solutions free from external interference.
The visit was also marked by the presence of Ahmed Ibrahim Mufaddal, the director of Sudan’s General Intelligence Service, who accompanied Burhan on the trip.
Eritrea has been a key ally of Sudan throughout the conflict between Sudan’s military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), offering support to the Sudanese military while providing refuge to civilians displaced by the fighting.
