Recent South African league champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, appear close to signing another player from the South African national team.
Earlier in the January transfer window, Sundowns secured Jayden Adams from Stellenbosch FC.
It was initially expected that Lebo Mothiba, formerly of Strasbourg, would be their second signing. However, Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso did not give a favorable report on the player. He stated that Mothiba is not currently fit to play and is only training at the moment.
As a result, Sundowns shifted their focus to Cape Town City defender Keanu Cupido. Reports suggest that the two clubs have agreed on a transfer fee of 10 million Rand for the player.
Cape Town City head coach Muhsin Ertugral confirmed the transfer, saying:
“Yeah, the deal has been done. Keanu (Cupido), obviously, is a great player. He looks for bigger challenges for himself, and he deserves it (Sundowns move). So, I think we’re good in the defensive line. We still have the youngster Sibusiso Ziba, and I was thinking I could give him a chance today.”
With this transfer, Sundowns have added to their defensive options as they aim to maintain their title challenge.
