The Tanzanian government is ramping up efforts to create a welcoming environment for both local and international investors in the tourism industry, aiming for significant growth and increased tourist numbers. Deputy Transport Minister, David Kihenzile, made the announcement at the Tanzania Society of Tourism Agents (TASOTA) Annual General Meeting in Dar es Salaam.
Kihenzile emphasized the sector’s recovery from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, which had caused visitor numbers to drop below one million. However, the latest figures show nearly two million tourists, with a government target of five million by 2025.
“Our natural beauty, rich culture, and extraordinary wildlife give us a chance to stand out globally. Through sustainable and innovative approaches, we can not only attract more tourists but also ensure the preservation of these resources for future generations,” Kihenzile stated.
The Tanzanian government has committed over TSh 1 trillion across three years to upgrade its airport infrastructure, a key component of its strategy to boost the tourism sector. This includes a new passenger terminal at Songwe Airport, as well as significant improvements to airports in Mpanda, Katavi, Kigoma, Mtwara, and Lindi.
“The government under President Samia Suluhu Hassan is fully committed to revitalizing tourism, aiming to attract a diverse range of companies and investors,” Kihenzile added.
The TASOTA event drew major players from tourism and hospitality for discussions on advancing Tanzania’s travel industry. TASOTA Chairperson Agnes Rwegasira highlighted that collaboration between the government and private sector is crucial to promoting both domestic and international tourism.
She added, “With improved support for hotels, travel agencies, and tour guides, we can enhance Tanzania’s position in the global tourism market.”
This push reflects broader efforts across Africa to capitalize on tourism as a growth engine, with countries like Kenya, Rwanda, and South Africa also investing in infrastructure and policy reforms to attract visitors.
