Leicester City forward Jordan Ayew will serve as Ghana’s captain in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Previously, his father Abedi Pele and his brother Andre Ayew also held the position of captain for Ghana, leading the team to four Africa Cup of Nations titles.
Jordan stated that continuing this legacy is an honor for him:
“This was something written in the stars, We are just a passionate family. We just want to do our best and make people enjoy our game.”
Ayew Embraces Captaincy Legacy of Abedi Pele and Andre Ayew
“I’m not someone who thinks about being a captain or a leadership role, I just want to enjoy playing football, winning games, scoring goals, and making people happy.”
“There has been a lot of talk, but I’ve always stayed silent in my corner. I didn’t focus on all that. Everything developed naturally.”
The 33-year-old has made 104 appearances for the national team and scored 28 goals. His brother Andre Ayew, however, holds the record for the most appearances for Ghana’s national team with 120 caps.
Ayew Reflects on Personal Growth and Role in Ghana’s Success
Jordan Ayew acknowledged the responsibilities of captaincy and mentioned that leadership involves hard work. “
Andre and I are very close – he congratulated me and gave me some advice. Asamoah Gyan did the same,” he said.
“I’ve learned from the best – whether it’s Asamoah or Andre. I try to take something from their qualities. I will continue to take the advice that helped me grow and become the person I am today.”
Ayew played a crucial role in Ghana’s qualifiers, having scored a hat-trick in the match against the Central African Republic last year.
Ghana will face Chad today. The return of Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey is also great news for the team.
Ayew is currently one of the team’s top scorers with four goals, trailing behind Salah and Trezeguet, who each have five goals in the tournament.
