In the wake of the rubbish slide catastrophe at the KCCA landfill in Kiteezi, the family of at least 28 persons who are still missing are beginning to lose faith. On August 10, a catastrophic accident occurred when a structural failure in the garbage mass of the landfill engulfed up to 44 dwellings
Following the incident, 18 injured people were rescued and 35 bodies were recovered from the trash blocks. However, according to police data, up to 28 persons are still unaccounted for.Patrick Onyango, a spokesman for the Kampala Metropolitan Police, is concerned that more bodies could be stuck in the flooded region.
However, throughout the past five days, intense rain and flooding have made rescue efforts more difficult. After creating a drainage canal to let water escape the area, rescue efforts got underway again this afternoon.
“Before deploying the earth-moving equipment to the Kitetika site, we want to reassure the victims who lost their loved ones that the team is first solving this flooding emergency,” Onyango stated.
Some of the missing persons’ relatives believe there may be more victims still hidden under the enormous pile of trash. The distraught individuals are worried that the excavators might have merely reached the surface and may have discovered further dead buried below.
Concerned Ugandans are continuing to provide vital assistance, including as food, sleeping arrangements, and other necessities, to the more than 300 affected people who are seeking shelter in makeshift tents at the Kiteezi Church of Uganda Primary School grounds.
