The Turkish government, in partnership with South Sudan, broke ground on a new prison in Juba.
The $30 million project, which will accommodate 1,216 inmates, is being executed by Mehmet Veysi Gonuc Construction (MVG) in collaboration with MADO Construction and Enterprise Company Limited.
The 1,500-square-meter facility is located in Kapuri, Luri Payam, and is expected to be completed within ten months.
Central Equatoria State Governor Gen. Augustino Jadalla Kamilo Wani, speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, emphasized that the facility will help ease the overcrowding at Juba Central Prison.
“This facility will have a major impact on the people here, particularly the prisoners.
Juba prison is currently holding over 3,000 inmates, far exceeding its capacity. I am confident that this new prison will provide some much-needed relief,” Wani noted.
He went on to say, “Allow me to share some specifics about the project. A total of $30 million will be invested, and 300 South Sudanese will be employed as part of the construction process.
The new prison will have the capacity to house 1,216 inmates.”
Mutaf added, “As far as I know, the project will be completed within ten months and will cover an area of 1,500 square meters.
The Turkish private sector has built a strong global reputation for delivering high-quality projects.”
Lt. Gen. Juma Doka Legge, Director General of Central Equatoria State Prison Service, expressed gratitude to the Juba County Commissioner for allocating 10,000 square meters of land for the project.
“Honorable Governor, the primary role of the prison system is to ensure that inmates are securely housed while also facilitating their rehabilitation, development, and eventual reintegration into society,” Legge remarked
