UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed Visits Port Sudan to Support Relief Efforts
On Thursday, Amina J. Mohammed, the UN Deputy Secretary-General, arrived in Port Sudan for a meeting with the Transitional Sovereignty Council. According to a news statement from the Secretary-General’s Office, Mohammed is accompanied by senior officials and the UN country team, including Clementine Nkweta-Salami, the Humanitarian Coordinator and Resident Coordinator for Sudan. The primary goal of the visit is to strengthen relief efforts in Sudan.
Following her visit to Port Sudan, the Deputy Secretary-General and her delegation will travel to Adré, Chad, to address the country’s numerous challenges, including regional issues and significant hazards, and to advocate for international cooperation. During their visit, the delegation will engage with local officials and leaders of both host and refugee communities.
Since April 2023, Sudan has been embroiled in a conflict between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF). This conflict, which has claimed thousands of lives, has caused severe humanitarian impacts. The neighboring country of Chad is facing increasing pressure due to the influx of displaced individuals who have sought refuge there.
