Over 3,000 individuals have fled El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, as intensified fighting continues between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The General Coordination of Displaced Persons and Refugee Camps reports that 642 families have sought refuge in the Jebel Marra mountains.
Displaced individuals face dire humanitarian conditions, lacking essentials like food, medicine, and clean water. The organization’s spokesperson, Adam Rajal, has appealed for increased donor support to address the growing crisis.
The RSF aims to seize El Fasher, a key stronghold of the central government in Darfur, as heavy weaponry fuels ongoing confrontations. Witnesses report that RSF forces shelled northern and western areas of the city before engaging joint forces northeast of the region.
The Sudanese air force claims to have destroyed RSF tanks in Jugu Jugu and conducted strikes on opposing positions southeast of El Fasher.
Since May, over 500,000 people have fled El Fasher. Some have found shelter in Jebel Marra, controlled by the Sudan Liberation Movement, while others have moved to northern Sudan, further amplifying the region’s humanitarian challenges.
