Tigst Assefa was the winner of the women’s race at the London Marathon.
The Ethiopian athlete also broke the women’s-only world record with a time of 2 hours, 15 minutes, and 50 seconds. This result was 26 seconds faster than the previous record.
Assefa shared her excitement with BBC One, saying:
“Last year, I finished second here, so winning this year is very special for me. I am really very happy.”
“Last year, the cold weather and my hamstring tightening up created problems. This year, the weather suited me better.”
“I am very pleased with how the race went.”
Joyciline Jepkosgei finished second, nearly three minutes behind Assefa. Dutch athlete Sifan Hassan, the 2023 champion, came third.
Sebastian Sawe Dominates Men’s Race
In the men’s race, Kenya’s Sebastian Sawe claimed victory. The Kenyan athlete summarized his achievement with the following words:
“I am so happy. This is my fastest time at the London Marathon.”
“I prepared very well for this race, so it is a great honor for me to have won.”
Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo finished second, about one minute behind, while 2024 champion Alexander Mutiso Munyao came third.
Swiss Athletes Sweep Wheelchair Races
In the wheelchair races, Swiss athletes claimed victories in both the men’s and women’s categories for the second consecutive year.
Catherine Debrunner broke her own course record in the women’s race, while Marcel Hug secured his seventh victory in the men’s race.
