TikTok recently announced that it removed more than 2.1 million videos in Nigeria during the second quarter of 2024 for breaching its community guidelines. This move is part of the platform’s ongoing efforts to improve content moderation and provide a safer environment for its users.
According to the latest Community Guidelines Enforcement Report released on Tuesday, these videos represented less than 1% of all uploads in Nigeria during the period. The report highlighted that 99.1% of the removed videos were flagged and taken down proactively before any user complaints, with 90.7% of them removed within 24 hours of detection. These figures demonstrate TikTok’s commitment to curbing harmful content and maintaining a secure platform for Nigerian users.
TikTok also reiterated its continued investment in advanced technologies to enhance content moderation and identify potential risks, signaling its dedication to transparency and safety for its global audience, particularly in Nigeria.
On a global scale, TikTok removed over 178 million videos in June 2024, with 144 million taken down by automated systems. The platform’s proactive detection rate globally has reached 98.2%, reflecting significant progress in identifying and removing harmful content before it reaches users. TikTok, owned by ByteDance, is a private company with 60% of its shares held by global institutional investors and the remaining 40% divided between its founders and employees.
