The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has once again demonstrated its commitment to regional integration, cultural heritage preservation, and gender equality with the successful conclusion of the 13th ECOWAS African Wrestling Tournament (TOLAC 2025).
Following the event, a closing ceremony was held at the Velodrome, MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
During the ceremony, the Chairman of the National Sports Commission of Nigeria, Mallam Shehu Dikko, praised ECOWAS for its leadership in using sports as a tool for unity and development.
He announced the overall team rankings, with Senegal securing first place, Nigeria finishing second, and Benin taking third place. Dikko emphasized that traditional wrestling is not just a sport but a fundamental element of the continent’s heritage.
“Over the past days, we have witnessed not just fierce but healthy competition. More importantly, we have seen a true demonstration of skill, strength, and the rich cultural heritage that binds us as a region.”
A historic milestone was achieved in this year’s tournament as female wrestlers participated for the first time. This groundbreaking inclusion highlighted ECOWAS’ dedication to gender equality and social progress.
The tournament’s conclusion on International Women’s Day further underscored the idea that tradition and inclusivity can thrive together under ECOWAS’ leadership.
In the women’s category, Ebipatei Lienbofa (Nigeria) won the 66KG division, while Ebi Bigos (Nigeria) triumphed in the 76KG category.
In the men’s competition, Siny Sembene (Senegal) won the 86KG division, Gora Niang (Senegal) secured victory in the 100KG category, and Ngagne Sene (Senegal) emerged as the champion in the 120KG division.
Beyond being a sporting event, TOLAC 2025 also served as a diplomatic platform, fostering regional cooperation, dialogue, and peacebuilding.
The tournament provided opportunities to discuss the role of sports in economic development, youth empowerment, and cultural diplomacy, reinforcing its broader impact beyond the wrestling arena.
