Tunisian authorities facilitated the voluntary return of 7,250 irregular migrants to their home countries in 2024, according to a statement from the country’s parliament.
Mohamed Ben Ayed, Tunisia’s secretary of state to the foreign minister, revealed during a parliamentary session that the repatriation effort was achieved through cooperation with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and neighboring countries Algeria and Libya.
Ben Ayed highlighted the “positive development” in coordination with neighboring nations, which has contributed to reducing the influx of irregular migrants entering Tunisia on their way to Europe.
Tunisia, grappling with significant economic and political challenges, has become a primary departure point for migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean to Europe. Authorities frequently announce the interception of migration attempts, reflecting the scale of the crisis.
The voluntary return initiative underscores ongoing efforts to address migration pressures in the region while strengthening partnerships with international and regional organizations.
