A Tunisian court has sentenced Noureddine Bhiri, a prominent member of the Ennahda opposition party, to 10 years in prison on charges of undermining state security and inciting division among Tunisians. The verdict was delivered on Friday, as reported by Bhiri’s lawyer, Monia Bouali.
Bouali criticized the trial, stating it was marred by numerous legal violations, particularly concerning a Facebook post that was allegedly linked to Bhiri but was proven non-existent through technical tests.
Bhiri has been in detention for the past 18 months, along with several other critics of President Kais Saied. The President has been consolidating power and governing by decree, actions that the opposition has labeled as a coup against democratic principles.
