Tunisian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohamed Ali Nafti has expressed concern over the lack of progress in the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) investigations into the ongoing situation in Palestine. Speaking on Tuesday during a meeting with an ICC delegation, Nafti called on the court to take decisive action and hold accountable those responsible for crimes against the Palestinian people.
The meeting, held at the Tunisian Foreign Ministry, saw the participation of ICC First Vice-President Rosario Salvatore Aitala and Haykel Ben Mahfoudh, a Tunisian judge serving at the court. Nafti underscored the strong, ongoing cooperation between Tunisia and the ICC, highlighting Tunisia’s pride in being a member since 2011.
During the discussion, Nafti reaffirmed Tunisia’s continued support for Palestinian rights, urging the ICC to act in line with its mandate and deliver justice to those suffering under the ongoing conflict. He emphasized the importance of the court’s role in the fight against impunity for international crimes.
Aitala acknowledged the fruitful relationship between Tunisia and the ICC, noting the country’s contribution to the court’s efforts to uphold international justice. He also expressed his appreciation for Tunisia’s commitment to the court’s mission.
The meeting also delved into broader discussions about the working conditions of ICC judges. Both sides stressed the need to ensure their independence and impartiality, highlighting the importance of protecting judges from any form of political pressure or interference.
As global attention continues to focus on the plight of Palestinians, Nafti’s remarks have once again called for urgent international action in the pursuit of justice.
