Tunisian President Kais Saied has dismissed Finance Minister Sihem Boughdiri and appointed Judge Michkat Khaldi as her replacement, the presidency announced on Wednesday.
Khaldi was sworn in at Carthage Palace, taking over from Boughdiri, who had held the position since 2021. The ministerial shake-up comes as Tunisia grapples with a deepening financial crisis, leading to shortages of essential goods such as sugar, rice, coffee, and cooking gas.
Before her appointment, Khaldi led the Criminal Reconciliation Committee, a body established to negotiate settlements with businessmen accused of corruption in exchange for returning funds to the state.
To address the economic challenges, the government has implemented tax hikes on middle- and high-income earners and secured a $2.2 billion loan from the central bank to meet urgent debt obligations.
