Türkiye is set to assume control of a military base in Abéché, eastern Chad, following France’s recent withdrawal. This move highlights Türkiye’s efforts to strengthen its military presence in Africa, especially in regions previously influenced by French forces.
Sources from both Türkiye and Chad have confirmed that Türkiye has already deployed drones near the Faya-Largeau base, located close to Chad’s border with Libya. This base is considered a strategic asset. It enables Türkiye to enhance its surveillance capabilities and contribute to regional stability in the Sahel and North Africa, which have long faced security challenges.
In mid-January, an official agreement granting Türkiye control of the Abéché base was finalized after extensive negotiations between Türkiye’s ambassador in N’Djamena and Chadian officials. This partnership highlights the growing defense cooperation between Türkiye and Chad. Both nations are working to strengthen their bilateral ties amid the evolving security situation in the region.
Alongside the base takeover, Türkiye has reportedly provided Chad with advanced Bayraktar drones, known for their surveillance and precision strike capabilities. Turkish military advisors and personnel from Turkish companies have also been stationed at the Faya-Largeau base, further solidifying Türkiye’s influence in Africa’s security landscape.
This move is part of Türkiye’s broader strategy to fill the void left by France’s withdrawal. It aims to enhance its role in regional security and assert its growing influence on the African continent.
