The U.S. Embassy in Tunis has announced a substantial investment of 76.5 million Tunisian Dinars (approximately $24.85 million) aimed at revitalizing Tunisia’s date sector through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food for Progress (FFPr) Program. This five-year initiative seeks to significantly boost date production and reinforce traditional agricultural practices within oasis regions.
The project will be spearheaded by Partners of the Americas, a U.S. non-profit organization renowned for its extensive experience in agricultural and food security initiatives globally. In partnership with Tunisian farmers, the Ministry of Agriculture, and local civil society, the program will focus on essential activities such as training, funding for improved water management, and enhanced irrigation practices. Furthermore, it aims to increase labor efficiency and expand export opportunities, particularly targeting the American market.
Ambassador Joey Hood emphasized the significance of this investment, noting that “Tunisia consistently impresses global consumers with the quality of its agricultural products.” He reaffirmed the U.S. government’s commitment to strengthening ties with Tunisian farmers, highlighting the rising demand for both Tunisian olive oil and dates in international markets. Hood expressed confidence that this increased American support will lead to greater exports of Tunisian dates, allowing consumers worldwide to enjoy these products.
This initiative marks a critical advancement in supporting Tunisia’s agricultural resilience and market growth, benefiting farmers across the date industry. It is part of the broader efforts by the U.S. Embassy to promote economic development and enhance trade relations between the United States and Tunisia.
