The US Embassy in Nigeria has responded to allegations by Republican Congressman Scott Perry, who accused the US Agency for International Development (USAID) of indirectly funding terrorist organizations, including Boko Haram.
In a statement posted on social media, the Embassy denied allegations that funds were being diverted to terrorist groups, assuring that rigorous monitoring and evaluation systems were in place to ensure that US assistance was used for its intended purposes.
The Embassy also condemned the actions of Boko Haram and other extremist groups operating in Nigeria and the wider region. It reiterated the US’s strong stance against Boko Haram, citing its designation as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) in 2013, which led to measures such as asset blocking, prosecution of members, and restrictions on their travel to the US.
The US Embassy emphasized its ongoing commitment to counterterrorism efforts and its ongoing collaboration with Nigeria and regional partners to enhance security and combat terrorism.
