The United Arab Emirates (UAE) accused the Sudanese army of bombing its ambassador’s residence in Khartoum, pledging to file a formal complaint with the UN and other regional bodies.
According to the UAE Foreign Ministry, a Sudanese military aircraft caused “significant damage” to the building.
The exact timing of the incident was not disclosed.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will submit a protest letter against this attack by the Sudanese Armed Forces to the African Union, the United Nations, and the League of Arab States, calling it a flagrant violation of the principle of diplomatic inviolability,” the statement said.
In April 2023, all foreign embassies withdrew from Khartoum due to the fighting between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Most diplomatic missions relocated to Port Sudan on the east coast.
The Sudanese army recently launched a major offensive against RSF positions in the capital, accusing the RSF of looting and attacking foreign embassies.
Relations between the UAE and Sudan have deteriorated since the conflict began, with the Sudanese army accusing the UAE of supplying the RSF with weapons, claims the UAE denies.
The UAE ambassador left Sudan after the war broke out, and this month, several of his guards also departed.
However, the Port Sudan embassy remains operational.Sudan has filed a complaint with the UN Security Council, alleging that the UAE supplied arms to the RSF via Chad.
The UAE has dismissed these accusations as “false and baseless.” Earlier this year, both nations recalled their diplomats.
