Uganda has appointed Michael Atingi-Ego as the new governor of its central bank, presidential spokesperson Sandor Walusimbi announced on Monday.
Atingi-Ego, who previously held a senior role at the central bank, returned in 2020 as deputy governor. He has been serving as acting governor since the passing of long-time central bank chief Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile in 2022.
In addition to Atingi-Ego’s appointment, reports from NTV Uganda, Daily Monitor, and Uganda Broadcasting Corporation indicate that economist Augustus Nuwagaba, a lecturer at Makerere University, has been named deputy governor.
