The Republic of Korea has significantly bolstered its global humanitarian efforts, contributing to critical food assistance programs led by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) across multiple countries facing food insecurity.
- Uganda: A donation of 3,000 metric tons of rice, valued at $2.8 million, will aid 332,000 refugees and schoolchildren. Uganda hosts 1.7 million refugees, with the influx driven by conflicts in neighboring countries. The support will provide emergency food rations and school meals, addressing rising humanitarian needs.
- Cameroon: In the Far North region, Korea’s $1 million contribution will help 1,500 smallholder farmers adopt climate-resilient practices and enhance food security. With nearly half of households in the region facing inadequate food consumption, this initiative aims to improve livelihoods and strengthen resilience against climate shocks.
- Sudan: Facing a severe hunger crisis, Sudan will benefit from $1.5 million in flexible funding to provide life-saving food and nutrition assistance to conflict-affected communities. With over 25 million people in acute food insecurity, the funds will support WFP’s emergency operations, targeting regions on the brink of famine.
- Kenya: A donation of 21,000 metric tons of rice, worth $14.2 million, will support over 565,000 refugees and children in Dadaab and Kakuma camps. With a 60% rise in refugee numbers over five years, Korea’s contribution comes as WFP struggles with funding shortfalls.
These contributions highlight Korea’s commitment to global humanitarian efforts, reflecting its transformation from a WFP aid recipient in the 20th century to one of the program’s top 10 donors today.
