On Monday, Uganda’s President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni expressed his willingness to mediate in the ongoing conflict in Sudan, contingent on the approval of the warring factions.
Speaking during a meeting with the United Nations Envoy for Sudan at State House in Entebbe, President Museveni stated, “I am prepared to mediate in the conflict, provided both parties are open to my involvement.”
He reaffirmed his dedication to contributing to peace restoration efforts in Sudan, identifying the promotion of identity politics as the underlying cause of the conflict. Museveni emphasized the need for the warring sides to agree to a ceasefire and return power to the Sudanese people.
The United Nations Special Envoy to Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra, expressed the UN’s full support for Museveni’s potential role in resolving the crisis.
“Mr. President, if there is any way the UN can assist in restoring peace to Sudan, please let us know. We stand ready to collaborate with you,” Lamamra said.
Lamamra also highlighted the worsening humanitarian crisis in Sudan. Despite attempts to establish localized ceasefires, he noted that ongoing violence and the influx of weapons into the region continue to endanger civilians.
“Even though fighting persists, there remains an opportunity to push for a ceasefire and address the pressing humanitarian challenges,” he added.
