Ugandan police have launched an investigation into the death of Nigerian professional footballer Abubakar Lawal, who allegedly fell from a shopping mall in the capital Kampala.
Lawal, 29, reportedly fell from a third-floor balcony at the Voicemall Shopping Mall while visiting a Tanzanian friend. Authorities confirmed that Lawal was pronounced dead on arrival after being rushed to hospital.
According to police reports, Lawal’s friend Omary Naima left him in his room, which is part of the shopping mall, making tea before the tragic incident occurred.
Lawal was a forward for Uganda’s Vipers Sports Club, and the club expressed deep sorrow over his sudden death. The club, for whom he played since July 2022, thanked him for helping them win two league and cup titles in 2023.
Tributes have poured in from the football community. Ugandan footballer Mustafa Kizza remembers him as a “kind, talented and loving person” as his former Nigerian club Nasarawa United mourn his loss.
Local media reports have raised questions about the circumstances of his death, with conflicting accounts initially suggesting he died in a motorbike accident.
Authorities are currently analysing CCTV footage and conducting inquiries to determine what led to the fatal fall. Items belonging to Lawal, including two smartphones, shoes, headphones and a training kit, have been recovered as part of the investigation.
Police have reassured the public that further updates will be provided as investigations continue.
