Amid widespread reports of intense fighting that has devastated camps, hospitals, and critical infrastructure, the United Nations urged the warring factions in Sudan to protect civilians in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur.
Clementine Nkweta-Salami, the UN’s Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Sudan, expressed deep concern over the deteriorating conditions in El Fasher, home to hundreds of thousands of internally displaced people who are already at risk of life-threatening hunger.
Reports indicate that famine conditions have already emerged at the Zamzam camp in El Fasher.
Estimates from the International Organization for Migration suggest that at least 250 people were displaced in the latest wave of fighting, according to UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric.
He noted that while efforts were underway to gather more data, there were no confirmed figures yet on the number of people suffering from starvation or the death toll in the Zamzam camp.
The UN’s plea comes amid an escalating humanitarian disaster in Sudan, where the army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces have been locked in conflict since April.
