The United Nations has urgently called for the reopening of Goma airport in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This airport is crucial for delivering humanitarian aid. Since January 28th, M23 rebels have controlled the airport, causing a significant blockage in the delivery of essential supplies to thousands of people in need.
Bruno Lemarquis, the UN’s Humanitarian Coordinator for the DRC, described the situation as a “humanitarian emergency.” He emphasized that the airport’s closure has severely disrupted operations like medical evacuations and the delivery of vital supplies.
“The medical infrastructure in Goma is overwhelmed, and thousands of civilians are deprived of crucial assistance,” Lemarquis stated. He urged all parties involved to reopen the airport to ensure the flow of humanitarian aid.
The capture of Goma by M23 forces has worsened the already dire humanitarian situation. According to UN estimates, the violence has claimed at least 900 lives and displaced over 100,000 people.
The UN’s plea underscores the importance of restoring access to Goma. This strategic border city serves as a vital hub for aid distribution. The airport’s continued closure has hindered efforts to provide essential medical and humanitarian assistance.
As the crisis deepens, the UN stresses that reopening Goma airport is essential for the survival of thousands in the region. The airport remains a lifeline for delivering lifesaving aid and support.
