UN Peacekeeping Chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix, on the second day of his visit to the Central African Republic (CAR), engaged in high-level talks with Prime Minister Felix Moloua to assess the nation’s ongoing challenges and explore strategies for peace and stability.
The meeting came against the backdrop of escalating humanitarian and security crises that have plagued CAR since March. Armed groups have intensified clashes, exacerbating displacement and civilian suffering. Despite these hurdles, Lacroix emphasized that tangible progress has been achieved in stabilizing the conflict-hit nation.
“The redeployment of government authority to conflict zones and stabilization efforts are beginning to bear fruit,” Lacroix said, noting the significance of these steps in restoring state control. He highlighted progress in disarming combatants and praised the reintegration of former armed group members into civilian life as critical milestones.
Key discussions also revolved around preparations for CAR’s upcoming national elections scheduled for next year. Lacroix underlined the importance of free, fair, and secure elections, describing them as a pivotal step in the country’s democratic development. The UN, through its peacekeeping mission MINUSCA and international partners, has been actively supporting the electoral process to ensure a credible and peaceful transition.
Another critical issue addressed during the talks was the need to protect civilians and strengthen adherence to international humanitarian law. Both Lacroix and Moloua reiterated the urgency of safeguarding vulnerable communities amidst ongoing violence.
While acknowledging the significant challenges that remain, Lacroix reaffirmed the UN’s unwavering commitment to supporting CAR’s efforts toward peace, stability, and long-term development.
The visit underscores the international community’s focus on CAR as it navigates a delicate path toward recovery, highlighting both the complexities of the situation and the resilience of the country’s leadership in pursuing a peaceful future.
