Today in Kampala, Dr. Filippo Grandi, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, met with Uganda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, General Jeje Odong, to express gratitude for Uganda’s exceptional support of refugees. Held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters, the meeting highlighted Uganda’s notable role as one of the world’s leading hosts of displaced populations.
Dr. Grandi praised Uganda’s inclusive refugee policies, acknowledging its longstanding commitment to providing refugees with shelter and support. Recognizing Uganda’s large refugee population, he emphasized the country’s humanitarian leadership and its welcoming stance towards those in need.
In response, Minister Odong reaffirmed Uganda’s open-door policy, assuring continued efforts to offer basic services and opportunities for self-reliance to refugees. He expressed appreciation for the UNHCR’s ongoing assistance, inviting further support to strengthen Uganda’s capacity to integrate refugee communities and enhance their welfare.
The meeting underscored the robust partnership between Uganda and the UNHCR, marking a shared commitment to advancing refugee protection and assistance. This visit is expected to enhance collaborative efforts in addressing the challenges and opportunities related to refugee integration in Uganda.
