The UN has reported famine conditions in at least five areas across North Darfur and South Kordofan, with nearly 638,000 people facing catastrophic hunger.
According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), famine-like conditions exist in Zamzam, Abu Shouk, and Al Salam camps in North Darfur, as well as two locations in the Western Nuba Mountains of South Kordofan. Reports indicate that starvation-related deaths have occurred in Darfur, Kordofan, and Khartoum.
A record 4.7 million children under five, along with pregnant and breastfeeding women, are experiencing severe malnutrition. Some families have resorted to eating peanut shells mixed with oil due to extreme food shortages.
The UN has called for urgent humanitarian access and the establishment of new aid corridors across conflict lines and borders to prevent further starvation.
