The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, wrapped up a two-day visit to Cairo, where he held discussions with Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Badr Abdel-Atty, and the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit. The talks focused on the political, security, and economic situation in Yemen, with growing concern about the impact of regional tensions on the country’s prospects for peace.
Grundberg emphasized that a stable and peaceful Yemen is vital for the security of the entire region. He highlighted the escalating conflict in the Red Sea as a significant threat, impacting both regional stability and global maritime trade. The Special Envoy called for urgent de-escalation measures to prevent further destabilization.
The discussions also underscored the importance of maintaining progress made towards a nationwide ceasefire, improving economic conditions, and resuming a comprehensive political process. Grundberg explored ways Egypt could contribute to these efforts.
Additionally, the Special Envoy raised serious concerns over the arbitrary detentions carried out by Ansar Allah, affecting dozens of personnel from the UN, NGOs, civil society groups, and diplomatic missions. He expressed alarm over the recent criminal prosecutions of some detainees and reiterated his call for their immediate and unconditional release, warning that such actions undermine trust and endanger the ongoing peace process. Grundberg also briefed officials on the UN’s continuing efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of all detained personnel.
