On Wednesday, July 24, 2024, the President of Burkina Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traore, welcomed a United Nations delegation headed by Under-Secretary-General Amina Mohamed.
This visit aligns with the ongoing efforts of the United Nations in Burkina Faso amid the current security and humanitarian crisis. According to Under-Secretary-General Amina Mohamed, the mission aimed to observe the situation in Burkina Faso firsthand to better assist in finding sustainable solutions to the country’s challenges.
The discussions with the Head of State focused on two primary issues. “We addressed the crises in the sub-region, including conflicts, governmental changes, and the climate or humanitarian crisis. These matters were discussed and comprehended. Additionally, we talked about development,” stated Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohamed.
She emphasized that addressing challenges related to education, food security, energy, and the economy, among other issues, is crucial for development and must be tackled alongside the security challenge.
“We hope that through increased consultation and greater support for Burkina Faso’s development agenda, we will find ways, solutions, and success in the actions we undertake together,” stated the UN Under-Secretary-General.
Amina Mohamed reiterated the United Nations’ commitment to maintaining its efforts in Burkina Faso and to “work in partnership with the government and the people.”
The mission also held “very constructive” discussions with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and a group of government members to gain a better understanding of the country’s vision.
Additionally, a meeting with international partners and the entire United Nations team in Burkina Faso was conducted to establish a coordinated support initiative for the country.
