The Grade 12 national examination results were released by the Ministry of Education (MoE), and it was found that 5.4% of students received the required minimum passing score of 50%. 36,409 of the 684,405 students who took the exam and passed the criteria required are now qualified to apply to universities. Eight percent or so of the students took exams online.

With a score of 675 out of 700 on the 2024 Grade 12 national exit exam, a student from Kallamino School in the Tigray Regional State achieved the highest score.
The Minister of Education, Professor Berhanu Nega, briefed the media today and stated that this achievement has been registered as the highest score in the Grade 12 national exam.
With 10,690 students passing the examination, Addis Abeba had the highest pass rate of all the cities, accounting for 21.4% of the candidates who took the exam.
The category of natural science courses yielded the highest score.Nine percent of the 321,536 natural science exam takers achieved a score higher than fifty percent. On the other hand, out of 353,287 students who took the social science exam, only 2% passed.
The worrying thing is the sheer number of schools that gave exams this year and had no students pass; 1,363 schools, according to the ministry, did not have any students receive a passing grade.
According to Berhanu, all regional states—aside from the Amhara regional state—were able to surpass the number of students who scored above the average in comparison to the previous year. He clarified that the Amhara region’s lower passing percentage was caused by the fact that only half of the eligible students took the exam.
The Amhara region is still deeply mired in conflict, with continuous battles between the federal government and the Fano non-state militia having an impact on essential civilian functions like education.
Nearly 97% of students did not meet the required minimum passing score of 50% in the previous year.
Just 27,267 (3.2%) of the 845,000 students who took the exam were able to receive the necessary score to be admitted to universities.
On the other hand, an astounding 66.96% of Ethiopian Grade 12 students who took the school leaving exams the previous year achieved a score of 50% or higher.
