U.S. Special Envoy to the Horn of Africa Ambassador Mike Hammer met with President Getachew Reda of the Tigray Interim Administration to discuss the opportunities and challenges of implementing the Pretoria Peace Agreement.
Dimtsi Weyane says that during their conversation, they looked at potential solutions to advance the agreement as well as particular roadblocks that needed to be addressed.
The commitment of the United States government to assist the Tigray interim administration in fulfilling its mandate quickly was reaffirmed by Ambassador Hammer.
On his behalf, President Getachew underlined the necessity of unified international pressure to carry out the agreement in its entirety, help displaced people return home, and deal with the humanitarian situation that Tigrayan refugees are facing in Sudan.
The president issued a warning, saying, “Failure to do so could have serious consequences for peace and stability in the region.”
Tsadkan Gebretensae, the vice president of the interim government in Tigray, was also met by Ambassador Hammer yesterday.
As per the details shared on the US Embassy’s Facebook page, they reached a consensus regarding the significance of executing the Pretoria Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (CoHA) in its entirety to bring about enduring peace in Tigray.
Hammer recently traveled to Ethiopia as part of a lengthy, multi-nation tour that took place from September 3rd to September 13th, 2024.
The tour commenced in Brussels, Belgium, where Hammer had talks about regional developments with bilateral counterparts and representatives of the European Union.
