On Tuesday, two German teams faced off in the UEFA Champions League. At the end of the match, Bayern Munich defeated Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 away, with goals from Harry Kane and Alphonso Davies.
After two legs, Bayern Munich advanced to the quarter-finals with an aggregate score of 5-0.
Victor Boniface, Bayer Leverkusen‘s Nigerian star, addressed the fans after the match, saying: “Thank you for your support.”
Boniface had just returned from injury and came on as a substitute in Tuesday’s match. The Nigerian forward played for 25 minutes, touching the ball 16 times and completing 4 out of 6 passes successfully. Despite a 0.29 expected goals (xG) value, all four of his shots were blocked.
Head coach Xabi Alonso, however, was pessimistic about the result. He believed they had already lost the tie in the first leg: “We didn’t lose the Round of 16 tie today but rather in Munich. In the end, we weren’t clinical enough, and we made too many mistakes. The Champions League is a competition where you can’t afford to make many mistakes,” Alonso said in his post-match press conference.
Leverkusen is now focused on their upcoming home match against VfB Stuttgart. They are currently in second place in the Bundesliga and still have a chance to win the title.
